Of being lucky to work for mid-sized company...

• As a IT addict I'm on the process of moving my personnal computer at home from MS Windows XP to Windows 7... I'll assume the consequences !

• Due to the mass marketing on this product from Microsoft, I have some private clients requesting - and insisting -to come in order to switch toward this new system... I'll not complain : they'll have a backup of their data made by me , and by reformating the computer from scratch , they'll feel to have a faster computer... and they'll pay me !

• On my main job activity I 'll not . Why ? because I'm lucky enough working for a midsize company which is not rich enough to jump immediately on every new blinking solution ! That's said, I'll do my way : setup one computer with all application; test them all; chose one   test user  and work with him on this new setup; and IF SUCCESS, we'll plan to implement it slowly...  until then the company will not spend a cent , will not have lost data, end user will not be disturbed... My point of view will remains " better to have a little old system that works , than jumping on the unknown".
  

 My key goal about Windows 7 for now ? convince all requester (from enduser to managers) that it has to be done with methode and not in emergency, despite the internet and media buzz !

What do you think of my position ?

Encore une Erreur Installation inexpliquée ...

Ce matin je voulais essayer Google Chrome, en remplacement éventuel de Firefox, pour ce que cela pourrait m'apporter dans l'utilisation des services Google. Ma configuration est ultra classique : MS Windows XP-sp3...

Téléchargement sans problème, mais message d'erreur à l'installation:

Ces deux produits phare des deux leader du marché (google et microsoft) désirent consolider leur position de monopole ...

Pour les particuliers, pour les TPE, voir toutes les PME sans service informatique, ce genre de message est inconcevable ! Aucune explication, aucun recours possible... Tant que ce genre d'erreur se produira, le métier de dépanneur informartique, le support informatique , les hotlines... auront de beaux jours devant eux.

Comment faire pour qu'une application s'installe sur tous les environnements standards du marché ?

Quel profondeur donner à un message d'erreur ?

Of surprise when teaching IT to the young kids in the 21st century

I do love « IT » even in my personal life. So far that I did accept to teach my oldest boy (10 years old) class on a Saturday.

I was ready for a 386 computer for twelve kids , a crappy MS Dos and children only ready to play with it…as we dealy hear that public schools are so poor. I was so wrong.

They had a Dell Computer for two kids and all of them networked to a laser printer ! So 12 computers whith flat panel screen running the very last MS Windows XP.

Then I discovered that children had to follow a very strict program : being able to correct a poem , colorize it , and then print it. Teacher was only there for spelling correction ! They were working with the very last Open Office writer !

I was thinking of the billions that companies’re still paying for MS Word to write simple letters…

Then I saw most of the kids jumping, once poem printed -without any help- on the fantastic Google Earth tool and sharing all together they summer vacation localization… still without any help ;-)

Here are the future generations : how’ll they fit in companies where internet access is prohibited and MS Word is still a standard tool for daily work ?

PS last night I had to help a father with a 12 years old girl blogging ! That achieved me !!...

De l'émotion ...

J'ai été invité ce jour par un fournisseur à visiter le musée de l'informatique à la Grande Arche de la Défense

Quelle émotion de revoir la machine sur laquelle j'ai débuté : le TRS 80 du début des années 80 ! Le system était clair et limpide, les documentations précises... Ah le TR-Dos, le Basic... La commande Poke qui permettait de programmer le language "machine" beaucoup plus rapide car pas compilé... Ah mon jeu de pêche à la ligne en 8 bits !

Un brin de Nostalgie ce soir evant mon MS Windows XP , la suite office 2007, en Wifi, pour dialoguer en Messenger tout en lisant mes emails sur Outlook... la machine est en 32 bits , la mémoire à 2 Gb, le processeur pentium à 600 Mhz ... sur un portable à l'écran 17 pouces...

...mais je ne m'amuse plus à programmer, je 'blog'...

De la surprise venue du libre...

Ma société doit acquérir, dans l'urgence deux nouveaux portables HP. Plusieurs fournisseurs habituels contactés propose des machines équipées avec le nouveau sytem de Microsoft Vista. Mais la politique informatique du groupe est de rester sur MS Windows XP pour le moment. Deux machines arrivent en Vista, le cout du downsizing système étant prohibitif. Afin d'installer Windows XP je décide de booter sur le CD de ce dernier...et rien !! Le système ne voit pas de disque où s'installer !

La solution pour sortir de ce blocage en démarrant avec un disque Ubuntu qui lui arrive à s'installer !! Ensuite de cette installation j'ai ré-installé Windows XP !
Sans rentrer dans la stérile polémique Windows/Linux, je constate juste que le libre m'a sortis ce jour d'un gros problème Windows !
