Of installing Windows 7 ... in a snap !

This week, I had a call for a person with a laptop running Vista, complaining of errors and slow response time.

I first removed openoffice (he had office 2007 installed) , two or three Internet brower, a lot of downloaded tools... His toshiba was still slow. I then decided to clean registry and HD (thanks to ccleaner) then decided to defrag and to restart. The computer was still so slow and messy that I decided to update all drivers from Toshiba support website to the last Vista release...Nothing better !

I then suggested Seven and he agreed , despite the additionnal cost : a purchase scandal , he said... I agreed , but he did not want to switch to Ubuntu.

So Yesterday it was time to move to MS Windows Seven. I decided to format c: drive and start from scratch as I usually do on reinstalling... after all needed backups of course.

What a shock for me : the installation including harddrive format in less than an hour AND WITHOUT ANY ADDITIONNAL DRIVER TO INSTALL !!! I had previously downloaded all wifi and ethernet drivers for this laptop and never used it !
Sound = ok , Screen = ok, wifi enabled = ok, wireless Mouse and keyboard = ok
no error or question in the tab to manage drivers !



Only two restart !



For the very first time of my IT experience in twenty years :

Thank you Microsoft ! 

This time, wuth windows Seven, 

it seems to me you've done a great and professionnal job !

PS : If I have enough time , I might spend time to setup a seven desltop for my company and test there all XP programs they're using...

Shame on you computer store !...

Today I had to fix a personnal computer : HP slimline :

According to the user, it is so slow that his son never used it well... prefering his father laptop !..even to watch pictures.

I first reinstalled the computer from scratch with standard VISTA ; in other words, no additionnal crapware (*). Then I installed Avast and MS Office 2003.

But, despite 2 Gb of memory, MS Vista performance reported 1/5 !!

I discovered the graphic card is the bottom neck : only 64M of memory when a laptop today is running an integrated 256 MB...

I do not blame HP, as when using it with MS Office it runs ok. However, everybody knows tday that a family computer will be used for games...

Don't you think that the vendor should have warn the end user ?

(*) all software installed by computer makers - supposed free- that in fact slow down the computer. Typically here the full last version of Norton.... that end user never paid for updates so probably infected his computer...

De la surprise venue du libre...

Ma société doit acquérir, dans l'urgence deux nouveaux portables HP. Plusieurs fournisseurs habituels contactés propose des machines équipées avec le nouveau sytem de Microsoft Vista. Mais la politique informatique du groupe est de rester sur MS Windows XP pour le moment. Deux machines arrivent en Vista, le cout du downsizing système étant prohibitif. Afin d'installer Windows XP je décide de booter sur le CD de ce dernier...et rien !! Le système ne voit pas de disque où s'installer !

La solution pour sortir de ce blocage en démarrant avec un disque Ubuntu qui lui arrive à s'installer !! Ensuite de cette installation j'ai ré-installé Windows XP !
Sans rentrer dans la stérile polémique Windows/Linux, je constate juste que le libre m'a sortis ce jour d'un gros problème Windows !
